The Montessori program’s child care and educational experience is based on the continuing self-discovery of the child and his/her acclimation to the learning process through every stage of personal development. It builds on the continuing self-construction of the child – daily, weekly, yearly – for the duration of the educational experience. Each of our classrooms have multiage groupings that foster peer learning, uninterrupted blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activity. Multiage groupings are a hallmark of the Montessori Method: younger children learn from older children; older children reinforce their learning by teaching concepts they have already mastered. This arrangement also mirrors the real world, where individuals work and socialize with people of all ages and dispositions.
The prepared environments of each classroom, along with their physical dimensions, desired outcomes, and documented results, carefully reflect the natural learning characteristics of the child at each stage of development. Dr Maria Montessori believed that “the successive levels of education must conform to the successive personalities of the child.”
Caterpillars (ages 6 weeks – 18 months)
This is our Infant care program and it is the beginning of the Montessori experience. Here is where the child initially learn through the exploration of sensory and motor skills. Customized stands, stairs, and bars are present to encourage motor skill development. The use of color schemes and soft music is used for the enhancement of sensory development. Grasshoppers (ages 18 months – 21/2 years)
This group of learners are classified as toddlers. Toddlers are natural explorers. In this developmental stage, they show interest in everything in their environment and want to examine and investigate every detail they find. They are developing both their fine and gross motor skills, loving to climb, run, balance and move things, as well as pick up small objects and work to put things together or draw. Toddlers are naturally sensorial and learn by using their senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing, and taste.
Our toddler program is created to facilitate this growth and learning. At this age, the classroom environment and the curriculum are designed to foster independence, self-discovery, socialization, natural curiosity, and exploration. Our Toddler environment is filled with inviting materials, child-sized furniture and loving and skilled teachers, creating a place in which each child’s natural abilities can unfold. Ants (ages 21/2 years – 31/2 years)
This program is a continuation of the activities, environment, and lessons that were taught in the Grasshopper program. The focus at this stage of the child’s development is on cognitive development, speech and language development, fine and gross motor skills, and social and emotional development. We foster independence by encouraging the child to perform tasks on his/her own. This is also the stage where we address toilet training for those who may not have mastered it. Butterflies (ages 3 – 51/2 years)
During the three- to six-year-old period, children make great developmental strides and show an enormous interest in the world around them. They are eager to learn, explore, and exert their ever-growing independence. The children learn through their interactions with their environment, by exploring, experimenting, touching, building, and doing things by and for themselves. Bumblebees (ages 3 – 6 years)
While many preschool children at this developmental stage still prefer parallel play, they are all beginning to learn to socialize, understand feelings, and manage working and playing in a group. They are fascinated by language and the names of things and are communicating well—adding new words by the thousands.
We believe that young children learn best through their interactions with their environment, by exploring, experimenting, touching, building, and doing things by and for themselves. Our preschool curriculum is designed to be developmentally responsive. Our classrooms are purposefully prepared environments, with stimulating materials and child-sized furniture and equipment. All learning is hands-on and experiential, with specially designed Montessori materials for math, language, sensorial exploration, practical life activities, art, science, and geography. We encourage students to explore, make discoveries, and use their imaginations.
Classroom activities prepare the children for subsequent or concurrent work in mathematics, reading, writing, collaboration and socialization. Through Montessori work, children develop strong observation and problem-solving skills. Use of hands-on materials allows children to begin to move from concrete concepts to abstract through manipulation, experimentation and invention. Students who master the preschool and kindergarten curriculum are extremely well prepared for the academic, physical, and social work of first grade. CALL US AT (972) 315-0337 or Schedule a Tour.
